This 1950s brooch was decorated with a beautiful shell cameo, held by a frame made entirely of 18K yellow gold and six double prongs.
The cameo represents the famous doves of Pliny, one of the most common subjects both on cameos and micromosaics; the subject represents four doves on the edge of a bronze cantaro full of water, one of which is intent on drinking.

"Colombe capitoline" and "Colombe di Plinio" were the names assigned since the second half of the eighteenth century to the Roman mosaic picture found in 1737 in Villa Adriana near Tivoli.
Specifically, the name "Pliny's doves" derived from the fact that the mosaic subject corresponded exactly to what Pliny the Elder (23 ca-79 AD) described as "work of Sosos" (the latter artist from Pergamum of the 2nd century BC) ), within his work, the Naturalis Historia.
In fact, Pliny wrote:
"Mirabilis ibi columba bibens et aquam umbra capitis infuscans. Apricantur aliae scabentes sese in canthari labro" cantaro ").
The mosaic mentioned by Pliny was designed to adorn the center of a mosaic floor decoration.
And precisely because of its remarkable quality, the mosaic discovered in Villa Adriana in Tivoli was believed to be the work of Sosos. However, only later will it be recognized as a Roman copy of the original parchment and its dating to the 2nd century AD will be moved.
